Explosive Power Tools

Today we learnt a bit about explosive power tools how they work and some safety. Their are a couple of different types of EPT the direct and indirect the direct fires the nail straight from the gun by the charge and the indirect uses a piston to shoot the nail. A couple types of nails are a smooth nail which is best used for shooting into concrete and a knurled nail which is best for shooting into steel.You should always use the apprioate PPE when using a EPT.Their are different strength charges and a power adjuster on the tools. EPTs are good and quick. You should get your tool serviced every twelve months and keep the tool and charges in a locked container. Never point it at anyone and never shoot it into the sky.

The Weathertex cladding was quiet a simple and easy product to use and also looks great. Their were a few things to lookout for when putting the boards in place make sure they are all securely in place, we put a couple of rows on and realised they wernt properly clipped on and had to take them off and start again. Also be careful when handling them not to scratch or chip the boards. We predrilled holes and use nails to fix the boards in place. the most important thing to get right is making sure the boards are absolutely level and straight, can do this by using levels dumpies or string/chalk lines.

Fixing
If the signboard is part of the building structure the instructions given in The Weathertex Owner/Builder Installation Manual must be followed. This specifies fastener spacings of 200 mm at board edges, 12 mm from the edge, and 300 mm centres throughout the body of the board.
Rigid fixings such as screws and masonry nails or anchors, should not be over-tightened into the signboard surface. Clearance holes should be drilled in the signboard to receive these fasteners and assist product performance.
The following is a guide to fastener types and their preferred maximum spacings:
Fixing to Masonry
Typical fasteners for fixing Weathertex Signboard to masonry or concrete walls include masonry nails and washers, masonry anchors and countersunk or hexagonal head with washer, screw fixings. Plastic inserts and screws may also be used. The fasteners should be selected and applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s advice.
When fixing Weathertex Signboard to masonry or concrete, space the fasteners at 450 mm maximum centres throughout the board. The number of fasteners entering the masonry or concrete can be reduced by providing a frame to support the signboard. Please refer to "Construction Considerations".
Back surfaces and edges of signboards which are to be fixed over masonry or concrete should also be painted to ensure that the board is properly sealed.
JOINTING
The optimum method of jointing is to provide 6 mm minimum clearance between sheets and at joins with other materials. Vertical joins may be formed using Weathertex Joint Trimmers.

TIMBER WALL FRAMING

Although brick houses are very popular in western australia, traditional timberframed construction is widley used.

The first step in setting out for walls is to mark out the positions of every stud, windows and doors on the top and bottom plates. We do this by laying the top and bottom plates on side by side ensuring their ends are flush together. Then by reading your plans we measure and mark everythings position on the plates. Then by working out off the plan we find out the hight of your common studs jack studs and the length of sill trimmers lintels and noggins. Once all your timbers are marked and cut out its time to nail them all together. By doing this the wall plates are layed on the floor and the studs are placed in between them ensuring their all bowed the same way. Nail them all together and nail in any noggins lantels or sill trimmers. In any door ways we cut half way through the bottom so they can be easly cut out at a later stage. We then check the wall for square and put on the approiate bracing.To stand the wall up lift them up and hold in place with temporary braces,by putting a string line along the top and bottom plates we can get them dead straight and level for plumb.Any corner studs are reinforced by fixing blocks cut to size and nailed in.

In western Australia Scaffold (Scaff) can be erected by anyone upto a height of 4 meters. Anything above that height must be errected by a licenced scaffolder. A scaff is a temporary structre designed to create a safe working area on the side of buildings or anywhere of a certain height.
There are a few different types of scaff the Pole, is made up from scratch by joining steel tubes together with specially designed couplings.
The Frame scaff, is made up of pre fabricated frames that clip together. It is a quick and easy system.
The Modular scaff, this is a sort of cross between pole and frame scaff.
The Tower scaff, This is fairly tall and narrow, its a free standing scaff and usually has weels which makes it easy to manover. This should never be erected more than 3 times its smallest width at the base.
For Scaffold there are 7 rules to rember.
1- Ignorance, people being ignorant of safety.
2- Instability, making sure the ground is able to take the weight of the scaff and its occupants, never pack up the weels and never move it with people on it.
3- Exceeding a safe work height, Read the safety manual and see how high your paticular scaff can go.
4- Mountaineering, never climb up the out side of the scaff use the supplied ladder.
5- Unsafe platform, Keep the platform tidy and always close the ladder hatch.
6- Untied tower, if your leaving the tower over night then tie it in or take it down.
7- Overloading, Has a safe working load again check the users manual.
And most importantly wear PPE a helmet and safety boots.

Self Analisas of Sub Floor

At my work place we have done quiet a few decks and have a fair idea of how it all goes together, but having recently learnt about setting out and using profiles it made life alot easier. I drew a scaled design of what i was going to build which again made things easier because i could get a visual of how things were going together. Once we got our levels and set up the profiles every thing just fell into place. Again i thought this excersise from the couple of work sheets to the design and then the practical was a very valuable and enjoyable excersise.

Self Analysis Setting Out And Leveling

I had never done any setting out before and was very interested about it all. I learnt about profiles and the way they work was pretty self explanitery but also very practical. I think that this is gonna be very usefull when im a tradie and use the fundamentals behind setting out in a whole range of areas in the industry.the things i did well i think was every thing from start to go and trying to be excact with all of the measurements and hights. out of ten i would of givin us a 8 or 9 again for the accurasy and speed we finished it in.

Self Analys Step Ladder

The step ladder was another good project for developing good hand skills with chizzles and also a good excersise to develope working off a plan. I learnt that when drawing the plan you have to be spot on and very neat. When im a tradesman it will come into use when i have to design jobs and be neat and exact. The things i thought i did well was neatness of the cuts and joins and all the little extras when finishing off like, extra grooves in the steps, a coat of varnish, and stamping my name and other words on it. I didnt do as well as i proberly should of with the drawings but they were still good and neat. Out of ten i proberly would of givin my slef maby a 71/2 to 8 for speed and accurasy. Over all i thought it was a good excersise.

15/10/07 we drew up the design of the step ladder then worked through work sheets on quoting msds and abestoses, then researched pine and answered questions on that.
16/10/07 I carried on with the msds excersise and made a start on the step ladder which i quickely realised may be a bit harder and take a bit longer than i quoted.
17/10/07 today was devoted to finishing the step ladder and making it look nice, i realised today that i did under quote the labour time.
18/10/07 We were in the class room until lunch working through plan reading excersises which showed me a bit more that i already knew, we then did some scale sheets. after lunch we went out side and did some leveling using a spirit level line level dumpi and a water level which was good because i had never used one of thoes before.
19/10/07 Today we did some plan reading and levels excersises which were good to learn more about using the lazer level and then transfering our results to paper in a scaled drawing.
22/10/07 It was all about setting out today and learning the best way to do so, as a class we went through excatly how to set out for a house. i thought it was a very good excersise and usefull to many areas of the trade.
23/10/07 I did a practical assesment today about all the setting out things we learnt yesterday it took a little while but passed with no dramas.
24/10/07 Today i did a couple of sub floor framing work sheets and then did three scale 1:1 drawings of three different sub floors, i again found it very useful and learnt a couple of extra things that i didnt know.
25/10/07 Today i quoted on building a subfloor and did the take off then rung culitys and recieved some prices. i then worked out how much the materials would cost and estimated how long it would take and figured out a price, making sure i wasnt going to under cut my self this time. I really enjoyed this because i think it will be relitave to when im working for my self.
26/10/07 Today i put my plan of the sub floor into action and managed to complete it sucessfully and with heaps of time to spare. If this was real world i would of made good money today and gained more clients through my methods i was taught.

Its used in areas that may be exposed to weather eg pergolas fences park benches, or areas the may be exposed to white ant fungi or bores.

its hazardous because inhalation of excessive amounts dust may cause tempory breathing difficulties and irrationof the eyes and skin.

Its a good idea to wear PPE and to cut in a well ventilated area.

CCA should be stored in well ventilated areas away from flames or sparks. No special transport requirements are considered nessecary.

MDF Assigment

Uses: -It may be used to make display cabinets, wall-panels and storage units.

The health risks are generally based on the machining and dust-particle control while working with MDF. Once MDF has been finished as furniture, or whatever, there is little or no acknowledged health risk.

If formaldehyde in MDF is being used, and cut or worked, at your workplace your employer should first try to use a safer material. If there is no alternative to using fibreboard then your employer should consider low emission board. Some board manufacturers are advertising low formaldehyde or zero formaldehyde emission boards made to the stringent German 'E1' standard. This standard is currently being reviewed by the European Union.
Where dust cannot be eliminated, the employer has to introduce control measures which will adequately reduce dust levels. This will require adequate ventilation. The most effective control measure is Local Exhaust Ventilation. The exhaust mechanism is normally attached to the workstation where board is being cut. As wood fibres are released from the board the exhaust should remove them from workplace air. This ensures that most of the dust is removed from the atmosphere as board is worked. Your employer should also keep the workplace clean and ensure that the workplace is free of any dust. Gloves should be provided to avoid formaldehyde coming into contact with the skin, and suitable masks should be provided to avoid inhalation or ingestion of fibres.

Storage: Dont store where it could get wet or mear a source of ignition. store in low humidity ant temperature high temp and inadequate ventalation could allow the development of formaldehyde vapors in the storage area.

The MSDS provides employers, self-employed persons, workers and other health and safety representatives with the necessary information to safely manage the risk from hazardous substance exposure.
It is important that everyone in the workplace knows how to read and interpret a MSDS.

today we did maths with bill and did basic addition and subtractions divions and multi. then hans came in and did team building with us got us into groups of 4 and started a bussness then sent an email to bill explaining our bussness. then did saftey with tony basicly learnt about saftey in the work place. then learning styles to find out how we learn best weather its visual, audio, or kinesthetic.which i was a third visual and twothirds kinesthetic.
